MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) ChallengeMathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge is a contest for high school juniors and seniors. Through participation, students experience what it’s like to work as a team to tackle a real-world problem under time and resource constraints, akin to those faced by professional mathematicians working in industry.

Recently, two groups of MCHS students competed in the M3 Challenge competition - a national mathematics modeling competition sponsored by the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics and Mathworks®.

Led by Ms. Suan Sprunger, this is the second year MCHS has participated in this national competition where students use mathematical modeling to analyze data in order to write a position paper on solving a real-world situation. Each team has 14 hours to complete the challeng
e, write a term paper outlining their position supported by the data and give their solution to the problem. This year’s topic was to use data from current semi-truck production to determine the feasibility of converting diesel semi-trucks to fully electric power within the next 20 to 25 years. Kudos to our students for putting their knowledge to work in solving the world's problems!
