Week 1

Tuesday, August 9

  • In class: Welcome & introductions. Students complete Student Information sheet. Class discusses AP Policies & Expectations. Join Remind 101. Turn in summer work.
  • Homework: Share course materials with parents and return signed documents.

Thursday, August 11

  • In class: Students turn in AP Policies & Expectations sheet with student and parent signature. In-class essay test over summer work selection.
  • Homework: None.

 

Week 2

Monday, August 15

  • In class: HTRLLAP. Groups create posters representing key ideas from chapters 1-10.
  • Homework: Work on SMB 1.

Wednesday, August 17

  • In class: HTRLLAP. Groups present posters representing key ideas from chapters 1-10. General class discussion of these sections.
  • Homework: Work on SMB 1

Friday, August 19

  • In class: HTRLLAP. Wrap-up general class discussion of chapters 1-10. SMB Entry 1 due.
  • Homework: None.

 

Week 3

Tuesday, August 23

  • In class: Receive Q1 Vocabulary Lists. Read aloud and discuss “Thinking about Literature: Why Study Literature? What Makes an Effective Reader?” pp. 1-17.
  • Homework: Read “Close Reading: Analyzing Poetry and Passages of Fiction” pp. 19-26. Complete “Activity” boxes on pp. 20, 24, and 25. Work on SMB 2 (due Thursday).

Thursday, August 25

  • In class: SMB Entry 2 due. Receive Crime and Punishment. Discuss pp. 19-26 and student responses to assigned “Activity” boxes.
  • Homework: Read “Special Considerations for Reading Poetry Closely” pp. 26-33. Complete “Activity” boxes on pp. 30 and 32. Study Vocab List 1 for Monday’s quiz. Begin reading C&P Part I & II (due Tuesday, September 6).

 

Week 4

Monday, August 29

  • In class: Vocabulary Quiz 1. Discuss “Activity” boxes p. 30 and 32.
  • Homework: Work on SMB 3. Continue reading C&P Part I & II (due Wednesday, September 7). 

Wednesday, August 31

  • In class: Read aloud and discuss “Talking with the Text” pp. 33-40. Complete “Activity” boxes on p. 34.
  • Homework: Work on SMB 3. Continue reading C&P Part I & II (due Wednesday, September 7). Read “The Big Picture: Analyzing Fiction and Drama” pp. 59-84 (stop when you get to the end of the excerpt from Brooklyn on p. 84). Complete “Activity” boxes on pp. 66 and 78.

Friday, September 1

  • In class: SMB Entry 3 due. Introduction to Resume Building and the College Application Essay.

  • In class: Q1 IR Poetry Presentations: (B3) Cuevas, Dooley; (B4) Bankhead, Barnes, Dickerson. SMB Entry 4 due. Continue Wednesday's discussion of C&P Parts I & II. If time allows, work with iBooks on Resume and/or College Application Essay.
  • Homework: Continue reading C&P Part III (due Thursday, September 15). Study Vocabulary List 2 (quiz Tuesday, Sept. 13).

  • In class: SMB Entry 6 due. Q1 IR Poetry Presentations: (B3) Ma, Nichols; (B4) Harris, Harrison. Pep rally will consume nearly one half of 4th period, beginning at 1:10pm.
  • Homework: Finish reading C&P Part V (due Tuesday, September 27). Continue working on your College Application Essay (final draft due Friday, Oct. 7.)

  • Homework: Continue reading C&P Part VI & Epilogue (due Tuesday, Oct. 4). Be sure you are nearing completion of your College Application Essay.
