Introduction

The Advanced Placement Program is designed to provide the college-bound student with the critical thinking, skills, content, and time management abilities that will lead to academic success at the post-secondary level.  In addition, students prepare all year for the national AP exams in May, high performance on which can earn college credit and improve a student’s chances at college admission and scholarships.  In our study of US history from 1607 to the present, we use both a primary text (The American Pageant) and a broad range of primary source documents to analyze the origins, development, and turning points of American history, examined through the context of economies, politics, diplomacy, social change, and culture.

A major focus of the AP History course is instruction over and the development of writing the college-level historical essay, in accordance with AP essay rubrics.  A multiple of released AP prompts- both free-response and Document-Based Questions will be analyzed, discussed, and written; released student samples will likewise be analyzed and discussed to familiarize students with the high standards of historical writing which AP students should aspire.
