Art II Syllabus

SYLLABUS FOR MCHS ART II

Purpose: In Art II students will expand on what they learned in Art I as well as utilize the methods of art that show depth and distance. They will study many aspects of portraiture, analyzing the master’s works and using these concepts in their own work.

Materials: You will only need a pencil, eraser, and your creative mind.

Daily Expectations
: My expectations of students are that you use your class time wisely and work on the project at hand.

If you miss class: Stop in and ask what you need to do, you may have to take work home or to study hall to get caught up.

Grading: Your grade in art will come from the following:

 Doing what is assigned and meeting the objectives of the project.
Your finished piece of work
Originality of your work
Being neat and careful
Using your class time wisely
Going above and beyond the project assigned (creativity)
Using your ability to the fullest.

Philosophy:

  1. Provide the opportunity to expand on the elements and principles of design.

  2. Provide the opportunity to have hands-on projects.

  3. Provide the opportunity to try a variety of media.

  4. Provide the opportunity to be free and creative.

Unit 1: VALUE, LINE, and TEXTURE:

Review pencil grades

Quarter 3
FOCUS ON TEXTURE AND COMPOSITION: DRAWING (1 - 3)
• Why do artist paint still life and what makes a good still life?
• Art history of still life
• Types of graphite
• Review elements of strong composition
• Viewfinder
• Extended drawing using value and perspective (at least 16” x 20”)

FOCUS ON COLOR AND TEXTURE: PAINTING (1 - 3)
• Intro to acrylic technique
• Mixing color
• Brush technique care and maintenance
• Underpainting, glazing, and blocking in color
• Final still life using analogous color only and no black

Small Painting Using Complementary Color (1 -3)
• Small painting using complimentary color only with white and burnt umber (under 8” x 10”)
• Focus on value and desaturated color
• Demonstration of smart design choices
